Indoor Track Returns To The DF-DUB
Reunion Arena, back in its hey day was the spot for big time indoor events in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Of course you had the Mavericks. Ringling and Barnum Circus, and the Dallas Morning news Indoors track and field championships. Yes, Dallas use to host a premier indoor meet back in the day that featured big names like Carl Lewis, Herschel Walker and local Track God Roy Martin. That was over 30 years ago.
Well, a new event is on the rise and will be run at The Star in Frisco, home of the Dallas Cowboys. It is being billed at the “Unofficial” Texas State Indoor Championships. The Dunamis Sports Indoor Track & Field meet will be held on Feb 9-11th at The Star in Frisco.
The meet will be host to college athletes and some of the nation’s top high school athletes. College competition will be held Thursday and Friday while the high school events will take place Friday and Saturday.
In the high school division, one of the premier matchups will be in the girl’s triple jump where you will have the #1 and #2 jumper in the city….wait, in the state….hold up, IN THE USA going head to head. California’s Tara Davis(#2) is coming down to battle #1 Jasmine Moore of Mansfield Lake Ridge. This looks to be an epic battle. The Woodlands Adrian Piperi will bring his A game to the venue. Piperi is currently ranked 2nd in the nation with a toss of 72-2 1/2. He looks to better that throw. Future Red Raider and current Mesquite Horn senior Kaylor Harris will be competing in the 60 meter dash and the 60 meter hurdles. She currently ranks second and ninth in the country, respectively. Over 40 Elite girls and guys are scheduled to compete. The talent level will be very high and competitive.
A number of Olympians are scheduled to be on hand for the event. Head Coach from The University of Houston, Leroy Burrell and assistant coach Carl Lewis are bringing their team from Houston to compete. 2004 400 Olympic Gold Medalist, Jeremy Wariner is scheduled to make an appearance. Also scheduled to attend are members of the Texas Track & Field Coaches Hall Of Fame.
Meet officials are looking to make this meet a National Premier meet for years to come. “There will be athletes from all over the country in attendance at this meet. Many college athletes are looking to meet the NCAA automatic standard. This meet will give them that opportunity to meet those standards” stated meet director John Ross. “This is going to be one of the fastest tracks in the country” Ross said. “Plus with all of the college coaches in attendance, this is going to be a great showcase meet for the high school athlete” Ross continued.
There is still time to register your athlete for the Dunamis Sports Indoor Track & Field meet. Registration for the meet will end Monday February 6th at 12:00 noon. Tickets can be purchased at Ticketmaster.
